What happens when a woman decides not to stay silent and endure, instead walk away with nothing but an almost empty Samsonite?

This is the story of Seema Khan, the only daughter of the once-illustrious Khans, who grows up in a home devoid of affection. A cold, distant mother and a father slipping into the fog of dementia leave her aching for connection. She marries Momin, hoping that his house might offer the sense of belonging she’s craved all her life. But instead of love, she’s met with condescension, rejection, and the slow erosion of her identity.

When even her own mother turns her away, Seema doesn’t crumble. She does the unthinkable in a society where women are conditioned to “save the marriage” at any cost — she leaves.

London becomes her unexpected sanctuary, where solitude and art guide her to rediscover her worth and identity, away from the suffocating ideals of home.

The novel is a quick read that strikes a familial and painful chord. While the writing itself may not be groundbreaking, the story’s emotional truth is undeniable. The prose is simple and straightforward. It is an honest portrayal of the silent, generational burden on women. Seema doesn’t rebel loudly. She simply chooses herself and speaks her mind. She walks away not to escape but to find herself. She realises that the key to her happiness lies within herself and not in a man, in-laws, or even parents. She finds fulfillment in solitude.

So, if you’re looking for a book to get you out of your slump, this is just the perfect one.
