This book follows the story of a seventeen-year-old Julie and her boyfriend Sam. Julie's future is all planned out. She would attend college in a city, move out of her small town house and live with her boyfriend until an unfortunate event that causes Sam's death and devastates Julie's life and throws everything out of track.
Julie is heartbroken. She skips Sam's funeral, throws away his things and tries to forget him. But a message from Sam in her school yearbook, brings all suppressed feelings back.
Overwhelmed and desperate to hear Sam's voice, Julie calls his number to hear the voicemail. But to her utter surprise, Sam picks up the call. In a miraculous turn of events, Julie’s been given a second chance at goodbye.
I picked up this book knowing it would leave me emotionally wrecked, and it definitely did!
This was such a sweet, heartfelt, and deeply emotional story. I loved every moment of it. The idea of getting a second chance to say goodbye to a loved one really stuck with me, and I thought it was a beautiful concept.
As the story neared its end, I secretly hoped Julie would try calling Sam one last time, and that Sam would be unavailable, sending her to voicemail to hear his voice say, “You’ve reached Sam, please leave a message.” Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, and I was a bit disappointed.
Despite that, I absolutely loved the book. It made me cry more times than I can count, but it also filled me with warmth seeing the love between the characters.
I highly recommend reading this book, but please be sure to check for any triggers before diving in. If you have lost someone you loved recently, this book might not be for you.
