"Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley is a gothic novel that explores themes of ambition, creation, and the consequences of human actions.
It's leading character, Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but obsessive scientist, fascinated by science and alchemy, dedicates himself to uncovering the secrets of life. At university in Ingolstadt, he discovers a way to animate lifeless matter and creates a living being from assembled body parts. Later, he became horrified by the result: a monstrous, grotesque creature. Unable to bear his creation, he abandons it. The creature, left to fend for itself, suffers rejection and loneliness because of its appearance. It secretly observes humans, learning language, emotions, and morality.Longing for companionship, the creature confronts Victor and demands for a female companion. It promises to leave humanity alone if his request is granted. Initially agreeing, Victor begins the project but destroys the second creature out of fear they might breed and threaten humanity. Furious, the creature vows revenge. The creature begins to destroy Victor’s life, murdering those closest to him, including his best friend, Henry Clerval, and his bride, Elizabeth, on their wedding night. Victor’s father dies from grief. Consumed by guilt and rage, Victor vows to destroy the creature and pursues it across the globe.
Victor’s quest leads him to the Arctic, where he meets Walton. On the verge of death, Victor urges Walton to learn from his mistakes. Shortly after, Victor dies. The creature, mourning its creator, tells Walton it will end its own life and disappears into the icy wilderness.
The novel raises profound questions about scientific responsibility, the consequences of isolation, and the human need for connection, making it a timeless exploration of humanity’s flaws. It also warns readers against the dangers of pursuing knowledge and ambition beyond human limits.
