Written by Taylor Jenkins Reid, the masterpiece is a tantalizing tale that is reminiscent of the life of an elusive Hollywood star characterized by glamour and hardship. It is told in the first person by Monique Grant, a fledgling journalist, who allows Hughes to speak at length in her seventies about her golden career, seven marriages, and tumultuous relationships that significantly shaped her external and internal worlds. This compels Monique to look at her own past and forge her own identity with shocking discoveries as she investigates Evelyn's story further.
I must confess, that this book has surpassed my expectations. I was reluctant to read such a popular novel at first but I found the reading of this story exhilarating! Honestly, I did not expect it to make me cry; this story had no business ripping my heart to shreds. I simply felt sorry for the characters in this story and how they were not able to love anyone when I didn't even think that this was supposed to be a heart-wrenching story.
