The Bell Jar

Image
Author : Sylvia Plath Genre : Autobiographical novel Traits : Mental health issues, societal norms, self harm. Language : English  Click here to be redirected to BUY It all started with a queer sultry summer. The Bell jar by Sylvia Plath is a phenomenal depiction of women surviving with mental health issues during the 1950s. The society's perception of a perfect woman and Esther's pursuit to live unapologetically like a human was something that made the book even more riveting. Sadly enough a bigger battle was awaiting her- her constant dispute with her inner world. Her alacrity to become everything, her ambitions, her desires were  all threatened by her interrogative and unstable, yet a beautiful mind.  I connected with the character of Esther a lot of times while reading the book and trust me, there were times when I was Esther and at times she was my friend. The plot is exceedingly depressing and can be triggering enough for someone who has already been dealing with se...

The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down

Image
Author: Haemin Sunim Genre: Self-help Traits: Life, mindfulness Language: English  Click here to be redirected to BUY The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down is a bedside book written by a Buddhist monk. It is like a guidebook that reminds you to keep your mind calm and teaches you the value of slowing down in this busy world. The book discusses emotions, relationships, forgiveness, first love, and all the worldly wisdom that one can relate to. Each chapter starts with a short write-up by the author narrating his experiences, followed by bite-size paragraphs of wisdom and guidance. Colorful illustrations throughout the book by Youngcheol Lee are like meditation prompts and give a sense of calm. The teachings, although wise and profound, were not something new for me. However, I suggest reading the book slowly to best understand and absorb the content. R/W Rating: 6.5/10 Goodreads rating: 4.04/5 (As on the date of publishing this post.)
